Effectiveness of QR Code Ads

Mobopt\'s QR code.

If you haven’t seen or heard of a QR code it is a two dimensional bar code that can contain a lot of text data, URI info, and can be used to send email & SMS messages (think of it as a bar code on steroids).

Today not only large corporations are using QR codes but many ‘mom and pops’ as well.

QR codes on billboards.

Created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, it was used to track car parts. But due to the explosion in mobile use in the past decade, it has proven to be a powerful marketing tool. In Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, it is not uncommon to see only a QR code on a billboard rather than an image ad.  You’ll see not only younger people, but 50+ year olds pulling out their phones, scanning the ad with a QR code reader, and viewing the ad on their phone by being sent to the advertisers mobile site.

But if you think QR’s are just for Asia, think again.  In the second half of 2010, QR code scanning was up a whopping 1200% and is showing no sign of slowing down.

QR codes for promotional use.

So, how do you use it for your business?  Use our QR code generator, add the url of your mobile website (of course you can get one from us ;)), and print out the page.  Put it in your storefront window, local ads, and business cards. Put it on your promotional goods such as t-shirts, mugs and pens. Even more hardcore put it on your businesses sign. Put it out there, and watch people scan it.

Creative use of QR codes.

Don’t be surprised if you start seeing QR codes on apparel & linen labels, electronics and products for the support URL.

The next wave of marketing is coming and its mobile. Be ready for it.
